#INTERVIEW

Good afternoon, Diana. FunEasyLearn is a mobile English learning application. What makes it different from dozens of other applications? What is your uniqueness that the market and customers value so much?

First of all, not only English. Even when we started, in 2013, the application already had 4 languages. Now FunEasyLearn is learning 34 foreign languages from 61 native languages. By the number of languages, we are the first in the world. And secondly, FunEasyLearn focused on learning words, enriching the vocabulary. Most other applications are language lessons. As I’ve already said, we are focused on learning words.

I want to make clear for myself. Learning 34 languages from 61. Means ….

Let me give you a simple example and you’ll immediately understand. Let’s suppose that the application has three languages: Russian, Romanian and English. If we voice out English words, then native speakers of Russian and Romanian will be able to learn English. But English people will not be able to master Russian and Romanian, because the words will not be pronounced. In this case, the application would have 1 language to learn 2 languages. With our application, you can learn 34 languages from 61. For comparison, if I'm not mistaken, using the Duolingo application you can learn 36 languages from just 5 or 7 native languages.

34 languages is an impressive number. This makes it difficult for me to list them on the fly. But is “voiceover” a problem? Google Translate has already dealt with it?

Google Translate uses automated pronunciation. By the way, like most language learning applications. We made a decision from the very beginning and shall not deviate from it. All audio recordings are made in professional studios with native speakers.

But these are several hundred thousand “records”?

Exactly. And this is not the only difference between FunEasyLearn and other applications. We teach the language in a playful way. One of the ways is the 6000 images that we have prepared. Moreover, if we started with publicly available image databases, then now all the images available at FunEasyLearn are our own work. If we could find something else for nouns, then finding a picture for “to resent” or “to slide” or “quiet” is not an easy job.

Then you should have a rather big team?

Two illustrators, one designer, six developers and six linguistic experts. And more than three hundred translators in different countries. As I’ve already said, we work with native speakers only.

Year 2013. Now it’s 2020. FunEasyLearn is already seven years old. But this could not be your first project? As far as I know, you are engaged in a project with your brother.

Yes. Although our parents have rather wanted us to become doctors or economists, I have graduated from Computer Science and Foreign Languages, and my brother has been programming, probably, from the fourth grade. He has won several national academic programming competitions. We had always some small businesses and products. One time we have been dealing with promotional codes for online stores, but when we have come up with the idea of a foreign language learning application, we have put off everything and have completely devoted ourselves to this project.

You have started the project without external investments. And now you continue to develop at the expense of earned money. What are the indicators of FunEasyLearn's customer base?

Throughout the history of FunEasyLearn, the app has been downloaded 60 million times. Now we have about a million active users every month.

And what about monetization?

In the first year, the application was completely free; we built an initial customer base. Then we earned from displaying advertising videos and a part of the services became paid. Last year, we completely updated the application, and now we will build the monetization based on a monthly subscription with a monthly fee of $ 47 per year. This fee is much cheaper than the competitors’; there are prices of 80 and 100 dollars per year.

Will the free zone remain? For new users?

Yes, 800 words can be learned for free. Moreover, we have gaming bonuses for active study. If you really study actively, then you can use the entire application, using only bonuses as a payment.

You have started with android. Now is there FunEasyLearn for iOS as well?

Of course. Moreover, the most stressful period of our business is related to Apple, although, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. We have comprehensively updated our iOS apps. In the past, we had many applications on both Google Play and App Store with the same name for each language. When we have remade everything for App Store, it has changed the rules. It has become impossible to download many identical applications for different languages. Either one application or different applications under different brands. My brother and our programmers have passed though a week-long shock. We have done a great job and all in vain! But a week has passed, and we have tried to see something useful in this experience and, as a result, we have created a new concept and now we have one application for App Store with all languages. So, learning several languages at the same time is much more convenient.

Diana, don’t you think about finding an investor? It seems to me that FunEasyLearn could reach a new level with an aggressive marketing policy. And it is worth a lot of investment…

Since the last year, we have been thinking about this. If we are considered as a start-up, especially after the full announcement of the application, then we have everything that attracts investors. Idea, team, growing revenues. Moreover, if about 500 people work at the same Bubble, then we achieve significant results with a team of just 20 people. So we are ready for steps in this direction.

P.S. At the request of Diana, I add a photo of her brother and partner - Andrian Andronic.
