Serghei Coval. What is a Detached Team?

Interview with Serghei Coval, Managing Director at Best4u Development and Best4u International. Be great together powered by Tekwill Section

#INTERVIEW

*** preface not related to the section. Just recently, I wrote “емейл” in a text. When the hero of the interview was looking through its content, he corrected it by “имейл”. In the comments posted on Facebook, both versions were criticized, and I was proposed to write “почтовый ящик” (mailbox). But no one says: “Give me your mailbox”. Everyone says: “мейл” (mail). Then there was another proposal - writing not well-established English turns of speech in English adding Russian endings. For example, “он занимается prescreening – ом”. I thought over all these proposals and decided to write in the most convenient way so that it would be clear. In the end, these are texts for the Internet, rather than an exam in the Russian language.

This preface was needed because there were enough English terms in the conversation with Serghei. Some of them are definitely worth explaining.

Hi, Serghei. You occupy an entire floor, but on one door one can find the sign of Best4u Development, and on the other one the sign of Best4u International. What is the difference?

We occupy even more than a floor; one floor is no longer enough for us. And the difference is that Best4u Development was founded in Moldova 9 years ago and has been engaged in outsourcing, and Best4u International was established relatively recently and has not been engaged in outstaffing, but in creating detached teams.

(***it was at this point that I thought that a preface is needed for the interview, and I personally need, at least, an explanation of what detached team is)

Serghei, I’m not even ashamed to ask what is detached team?

Look here. Let's proceed with outstaffing; it can be otherwise called “staff leasing”, it’s a service when you hire an employee in your company carrying out all the required employment formalities, but he/she works for a third-party company with which you have a contract.

Well, I have come across this in the work of my audit company. When a foreign company comes to Moldova, it needs 2-3 employees, but it has not yet created a legal entity, it signs a contract with my audit company, it hires people, but in their work they are already subordinates of the foreign company. At the same time, a person is officially employed.

Exactly. Detached team is somehow a similar service, but with one significant difference. The service does not consist in hiring a few people who will be managed remotely. The essence of the service is that a TEAM is created, always with a team leader, and becomes part of the customer’s corporate culture, but located in Moldova.

This team is formed only after we understand who our customer is, what its corporate culture is, and what the core values of the company are. Only after this process we can help our customer to recruit the right team. This is how we actually create another office here, in Moldova, with staff suitable for the customer not only technically, but also culturally, in order to be able to accept its values and to get integrated into the corporate culture of the customer.

But even after the formation of the team, our job is not yet done. There are a number of procedures and “rhythms” for better integration of this team into the work with the company, whose employees are members of this team. Throughout this collaboration with the customer, we also discuss opportunities for process improvement and integration. And this concept of ours already comes from work practice.

Now it’s clear. Best4u International receives orders from abroad for the formation of teams suitable for certain tasks. You select the team, and, first of all, its leader, ensure the coherence of its work, employ it, and then you get paid for it. Moreover, you are no longer directly responsible for the operational issues of its work; is it the task of the leader you hired?

Yes, exactly. From abroad, so far mainly from Holland, the country where our parent company is headquartered.

And how many teams have you already formed?

Six. For example, the customer is a large construction company. It constantly needs to deal with the visualization of objects. We have picked up a team to deal with all these tasks. So, we are talking either about IT, or about areas very close to IT.
