Interview with Alexandru Cornitel, owner of Sandro Livv
In the last week of March, at the invitation of Alexandru Cornitel, Neapolitan tailor Giuseppe Pisano, a third-generation tailor, visited Chisinau. The purpose of his visit was to provide custom-made Su Misura suits for Sandro Livv's clients.
Without exaggeration, Giuseppe's first visit was so successful, and the results of his work so impressive, that many new clients, both men and women, expressed interest in Su Misura services from Giuseppe and Sandro Livv.
Thus, Giuseppe and his younger brother Gennaro Pisano returned to Chisinau on May 24, and now, the second "batch" of suits is being crafted in Italy.
To learn more about this process, we turn to Alexandru Cornitel.
Alexandru, good day. I saw you working with Giuseppe twice in Chisinau, taking measurements, choosing fabrics, and selecting suit models for clients. But I'm curious, what happens next when the measurements are sent to Italy?
You know, Su Misura really starts with individual measurements. It is important to us that each suit fits perfectly and reflects the client's personality. After the measurements are taken and the fabrics chosen, we head to Milan. From Milan, we go to Biella, which is 100 kilometers away.
Why Biella?
That's where the Drago factory is located. Last year, the factory celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was founded in 1973 by the Drago family as a wool spinning company. Today, it is an innovative factory producing 1.7 million meters of fabric annually. Drago continues to use the latest machinery and laboratories to develop new fabrics for men's clothing. Drago also constantly pays attention to environmental sustainability, developing programs to protect the environment by reducing consumption and ensuring more efficient production.
As I understand it, part of the fabrics for the suits was ordered from Drago?
Yes. We spent a day at the factory, studying all stages of fabric production. We were accompanied by Drago family members - Filippo, Enzo, and Alessandro, who explained every detail of the production process. For those of us involved in high-end men's fashion, it was fascinating to see how each thread and high-quality fabric is created.
Will it be easier to consult clients now?
This experience was very valuable. A deep understanding of the production process allows us to give clients more informed advice. We can recommend specific fabrics based on their needs and expectations.
But the fabric is just the beginning, right?
Yes. Therefore, we spent the next two days in the atelier, observing and participating in the suit-making process. We followed every step, from cutting to sewing, documenting each phase. We were accompanied by master craftsmen Luca and Francesco. They agreed, and we even created a photo project showing the entire labor-intensive process of making a suit from A to Z.
I imagine this was particularly engaging for you, given your past experience as a professional photographer...
This time, I was no longer a photographer. On every trip and during every meeting with the craftsmen, I continue to learn the art of Italian tailoring. One couldn't dream of a better school. This time was no exception. It was an incredible journey that allowed us to deepen our knowledge of the craft. We were inspired by the mastery of Italian artisans and learned many new things that will help us improve our customer service. For our team - including my wife, Natalia, and brothers Giuseppe and Gennaro Pisano - it was a true honor to work with such professionals as Filippo, Enzo, and Alessandro at Drago, and master craftsmen Luca and Francesco in the atelier.
We've known each other since your early days in the men's fashion industry. Who would have thought, in a small shop in Chisinau, that you would move to Italy and collaborate with the best craftsmen in the heart of the fashion industry?! What advice would you give to young people who want to follow your path?
Follow your passion, but remember to live a balanced life. It's important to combine culture with soul. Not everything can be learned from books; life experiences and social interactions are also crucial. Be curious, learn constantly, and strive to do everything better, without forgetting about the state of your soul and personal well-being.
P.S. Although this is an interview, Alexandru sent such interesting documentary photos of working with Italian craftsmen that I will allow myself to publish an entire photo report here.
